Sean Wilentz's Wankery

Sean Wilentz's Wankery by BooMan Sun May 25th, 2008 at 11:58:19 AM EST It's embarrassing to me that Sean Wilentz teaches at Princeton University. It puts a stain on the entire town. Wilentz has spent this entire primary defending the Clintons against accusations that they have deliberately racialized the campaign. Now he comes out and argues that Obama does not appeal to white working class voters. Dishonest throughout, Wilentz makes no connection between the Clintons' tactics and rhetoric a

A Twhirl Bug?

Sun, 25 May 2008 12:12:41 PDT
I’ve set up Twhirl (a Twitter client) with three accounts, in order to experiment with grouping tweets (sorta) by topic. I have my main account (kegill), where I tweet and where I follow people that I really know as well as people who I think have interesting ideas on a broad area of topics; a politics account (uspolitics) where I feed my US Politics posts and follow breaking news and political tweets; and an education account (kegill_uw) where I follow people whose primary focus is, well, e

Robert Frank: The Invisible Hand Is Shaking

Sun, 25 May 2008 12:14:46 PDT
Robert Frank: The Invisible Hand Is Shaking The NYT provides yet more evidence that the days of conservative dominance are ending. When economists begin taking to their pages to explain some of the things the free-marketeers have gotten wrong, well... Read for yourself. ADAM SMITH'S modern disciples are far more enthusiastic about his celebrated invisible-hand idea than he ever was. In their account, Smith's assertion was that purely selfish individuals are led by an invisible hand to produce

India to join satellite imagery providers

Sun, 25 May 2008 12:15:11 PDT
Fantastic news from India: Taking the global geo-mapping service Google-Earth head on, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) plans to launch its own satellite imaging system on its website within six months. Of course, whoever wrote this press release doesn’t know that Google is not in the business of making its own imagery, but rather accumulates satellite and aerial imagery from all comers. But let’s not nitpick: 'We are going to launch our own satellite images on the web within six

New Terminator Trilogy News

Sun, 25 May 2008 12:15:28 PDT
For some bizarre reason, I've always been a lover of sequels. Not all sequels, naturally, but I'm certainly more receptive to the idea of sequels than many people. Having said this, Terminator 3 didn't exactly ring my bell, compared to the classics which preceded it. Still, I'm passing on the below press release, for those who might like to read it. If you're completely underwhelmed by the prospect of a new Terminator trilogy, then scroll down to the bottom - you may be more titillated by Halc

G8 Summit Or Kindergarten Squabble?

Sun, 25 May 2008 12:15:50 PDT
News from the G8 Environmental Summit in Kobe, are not encouraging: The European Union has pledged a 20 percent emissions reduction by 2020, and has offered to raise it to 30 percent if other nations sign on. A U.N.-brokered agreement last December included a footnote referencing the need for cuts of between 25 percent and 40 percent. The United States, however, has not committed to a midterm goal, demanding that top developing countries like China also commit to reductions. Japan has called

Portland police watch closely as crucial evidence is hauled to a new warehouse

Each mover had to pass a rigorous criminal background check before picking up the first box. At least one set of eyes was on the men from Hillsboro's Curl Moving Co. at all times. A police car escorted each...

Anglicans on homosexual Marriages, 1978 and today.

Sun, 25 May 2008 12:16:53 PDT
“Questions of human sexuality are a matter of great concern to the Church of our day. Prominent amongst these concerns is the attitude of the Church towards homosexual persons. While homosexuality is a very complex and involved issue, nevertheless, in response to specific questions directed to the Anglican Church of Canada, we have decided that a statement is needed at this time. We believe as Christians that homosexual persons as children of God, have a full and equal claim, with all other p

All good

Sun, 25 May 2008 12:19:07 PDT
After good news from the data doctor last night I almost lit a cigarette. Instead, this old rescued image from my PC twilight zone will do. Due to a buggered cooling system in the cab I only worked four hours and was home early to celebrate the retrieval of over 9000 documents, images and videos, totalling 13GB. Whilst the videos files were mostly buggered the important few were saved in other directories. So thank God for partitioned hard drives. And online rescue programs. And Oyster Bay

Are we the change we have been waiting for?

Sun, 25 May 2008 12:22:07 PDT
Barack Obama certainly looks to be the heir apparent from where I’m standing. Hillary Clinton is plowing forward without any hope of victory - I honestly don’t know what she can possibly gain from staying in the game aside from even more dept. Not really the leadership I’m looking for in regards to ...]
